What started as a simple idea turned into 20 dog toys and a lot of happy shelter dogs at Salem Animal Rescue League in Salem, New Hampshire.
Since we started Dogwood Pack, we have mainly been focused on donating blankets to dogs and cats in animal shelters, but this time around we wanted to do something different. Instead of just blankets, we know that dogs in animal shelters can use a variety of different things including dog toys for fun and enrichment, so we made a game out of it.
We came up with the idea of buying one of every single dog toy at Dollar Tree to help those dogs that may not have toys at Salem Animal Rescue League. When people think of donating to animal shelters, like ourselves, they mostly think of the necessities like dog food, blankets, beds, and other things these animals need to thrive. However, we wanted them all to have some fun as well, so that is why we chose to donate dog toys to shelter dogs.
When we first walked into Family Dollar, we honestly did not know how large the pet section was going to be, and since we are a small business with a low budget, we were concerned with the idea of spending a ton of extra money outside of the blanket donations that we will continue to do for every sale. When we walked over to the dog toy aisle, we knew we could accomplish what we wanted to accomplish. One by one, we piled every style of dog toy into our basket and made our way to the checkout. We found squeaky toys, rope toys, tennis balls, and plush dog toys. When all was said and done, there were about 20 dog toys and the total came out to $30, which we were more than happy to pay so these shelter animals can have some more fun.
The only step left was to donate the toys to Salem Animal Rescue League, so we contacted them directly to discuss a date and time to drop off the toys. We also included blankets for shelter dogs in the donation of course! They were so amazing to accommodate our request on such short notice, and the staff at Salem Animal Rescue League were so nice throughout the whole process! They even told us about one of their dogs named Thor that needed help finding a home, and we are so very happy to announce at the time that this article is published Thor has officially found his forever home!
