There are so many different ways to help local animal rescues, and so many things they accept as donations for their dogs and cats! Always check your local rescue's rules and regulations for what they accept as donations first, but most rescues are happy to receive items you wouldn't normally expect. For this donation, we did something different for the Salem Animal Rescue League in Massachusetts.
Finding Free Stuffed Animals for Rescue Dogs
After scrolling on Facebook Marketplace for some extra dog and cat supplies to donate, we came across a collection of stuffed animals that someone was giving away for free in a nearby town. We knew that these stuffed animals wouldn't only be good for kids, they would also make amazing dog toys! We've donated stuffed dog toys to SARL before, so we knew they would be happy to accept them as donations.
Preparing Stuffed Animal Donations for Safety
Once we picked up the stuffed animals, we went through them carefully to check for any potential choking hazards like loose buttons, plastic eyes, or small parts that could come off. After inspecting each toy for safety, we immediately threw them all in the laundry and gave them a thorough clean before dropping them off at the rescue.
Why Stuffed Animals Are Important for the Dogs
Dogs absolutely love stuffed animals because they provide multiple benefits for these animals. First, these soft toys offer a way to reduce anxiety and provide companionship for dogs living in kennels. Having something soft to cuddle with can greatly help a dog get through the stresses of living in an animal rescue, particularly for anxious dogs who are adjusting to shelter life.
Besides being an aid for anxious dogs, stuffed animals also provide a safe outlet for dogs to chew, which helps them get the mental stimulation needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle! Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs, and having appropriate toys prevents boredom and destructive behaviors.
How Stuffed Toys Help Dogs Get Adopted
Not only do stuffed animals benefit the dogs themselves, but they also make a positive impression on potential adopters. When an adopter visits the rescue and sees a playful dog cuddling or playing with their stuffed animal, it shows the dog's personality and makes them more appealing. A happy dog with a toy looks more comfortable and content, and adopters absolutely can't resist giving them their forever home when they see how cute and playful they are!
